Getting Started with Kryptik: Which Deck Best Suits Your Play Style?

6 minute read

Thinking about picking up Kryptik but not sure where to start? Here are some thoughts that may help you make a decision based on your preferred play style.

My name is Donald. Welcome to a series I’m calling “Talking Kryptik”.

I have been playing a variety of TCGs for 30 years now. I love to try out new games and brew decks. I’ve had a lot of fun trying out Kryptik and I’d like to share my experiences with you. I will be adding some Kryptik discussion videos to my Youtube Channel in the future, but for now, let’s just “talk Kryptik” a bit.

Kryptik currently includes 4 main factions. Those factions are Humans, Ascendants, Mystics, and Undead. If you’re just getting started with Kryptik, analyzing each faction is a great way to learn the playstyles you may run into.

Let’s look at the key makeup of each faction and talk about gameplay elements within each.

Humans

The Human faction is made up of white and blue soul energy. Focusing heavily on combat and how to manipulate it, the Humans are an aggressive and powerful tribe.

Cards like  Clioimage and  Flanaganimage come down early and attack immediately due to having Eager while Orpheusimage and Weilandimage can manipulate your opponent’s Island to ensure your attack goes through. Add in some powerful spells like Imposed Withdrawlimage for more manipulation of your opponent’s Island and Charlie's Ascendancyimage or Feather Graft to buff your citizens. If you haven’t finished them off yet, cards like Charlieimage and Tiberiusimage are sure to add insult to injury. All in all, the Humans are perfect for anyone who likes to play citizens and go attacking.

Ascendants

The Ascendant faction is made up of white and black soul energy. The Ascendant play very much like a ramp style deck. The only faction to include a citizen that can engage to give you additional soul energy a turn in Eligorimage , the Ascendant want to fill up the island with high powered citizens as soon as possible. Cards like Raquelimage and Kensleyimage allow you to manipulate the Soul Row by placing additional cards there per turn. Once you have enough soul energy, you’re looking to play powerful finishers like Dookrakaimage and Osiris. Throw in some Due Processimage to pick apart your opponent’s hand and Capital Punishmentimage to destroy their early game citizens, and you have a combination sure to handle any situation. The Ascendant are the perfect faction for anyone looking to play big citizens and destroy everything their opponent has to offer.

Mystic

The Mystic faction is made up of blue and green soul energy. The Mystics make use of their control elements to manipulate the Island and gain the advantage over their opponents. Cards like Davyimage and Estridimage will keep the Island clear of your opponent’s citizens, forcing them to spend a turn casting them over again. If you want to keep those pesky citizens from ever hitting the island in the first place, add Daithiimage and Ozaraimage to counter whatever your opponent has planned. If that wasn’t enough, add some more counter spells in Dead on Arrivalimage and Rash Judgementimage and you’re sure to make your opponent fear any untapped soul energy you end your turn with. Finish it off with powerful draw spells in Fortuityimage and Vital Deliveranceimage , and you’re sure to never be without the right card for the job. Fans of the control play style will find the Mystic to be right at home in their wheelhouse.

Undead

The Undead faction is made up of black and green soul energy. The Undead rely on the use of recursion through their limbo pile to really get a lot of value out of every card. Cards like Zillahimage and Corbinimage make use of casting citizens from the limbo pile to return to the island. To get the edge in combat, give your citizens the keyword Toxic with Kanaanimage allowing them to trade up on bigger creatures. Several of the citizens have abilities that let them benefit from dying like Leifimage and Nolandimage allowing you to draw a card upon death. Throw some spells in the mix like Infinity Bladeimage and Renewed Tenacityimage and you have a value engine that is second to none. Players who want to make the most of their cards using them over and over again will find the Undead faction to be right up their alley.
